A rental car is one of the least necessary things to bring on a Strip-focused Las Vegas trip, and can genuinely work against you once you’re there.

The Strip Actively Discourages Driving

Strip traffic on weekend nights is notoriously slow, parking has shifted from free to paid at most major resorts, and the monorail or rideshare will usually get you between casinos faster than driving and parking yourself.

When a Car Earns Its Keep

Red Rock Canyon, about 30 minutes west of the Strip, and Hoover Dam, about 45 minutes southeast, are both far more practical by car than by tour bus if you want flexibility. A day trip to the Grand Canyon’s West Rim, roughly 2.5 hours away, is also easiest with your own vehicle.

Renting Only for the Day Trip

Many visitors skip a rental for their Strip-based days and pick one up for a single day dedicated to Red Rock Canyon or Hoover Dam, avoiding daily resort parking fees while still getting outside the city.

Compare rental rates above if the desert outside Las Vegas is part of your plans, or check flight and hotel options if you’re keeping the trip Strip-only.
