Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the primary gateway to Southern California, sitting on the coast about 17 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Nine Terminals Around a Horseshoe
LAX’s nine terminals, numbered 1 through 8 plus the Tom Bradley International Terminal, are arranged in a horseshoe connected by the free Automated People Mover train, which replaced the old shuttle buses between terminals.
Getting Downtown Without a Car
The People Mover connects to the Metro C Line and to LAX FlyAway buses, which run direct to Union Station downtown roughly every 30 minutes for a flat fare. It is a far more predictable option than a taxi or rideshare during rush hour traffic on the 405.
LAX vs. Burbank and Long Beach
If your trip centers on the San Fernando Valley or Downtown LA, Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is smaller and often faster to clear, while Long Beach Airport (LGB) is worth checking for flights to Orange County or the South Bay.
